Because of the way in which the fields taper from the center of the open-ended NRD guide, the radiator has a very low side-lobe level and narrow beamwidth. As the structure is not resonant, it has an inherently wide bandwidth. These are sought-after attributes in the application of such radiators as elements in linear antenna arrays.
