✦ Synopsis

Analysis of present-day plant cuticles by flash pyrolysis methods revealed the presence of a previously unknown, non-saponifiable highly aliphatic biopolymer. Its occurrence in fossil plant cuticles suggests a high chemical resistance towards diagenesis and offers a clue to the unraveling of the chemical nature of the coal maceral cutinite.
