β¦ Synopsis
In various types of voltammetry where depolarizers are transferred solely by diffusion, a mode of electrolysis can be considered as a boundary condition of a diffusion equation. Usually, boundary conditions of diffusion equations are classified into three types :
(i) In the first (Dirichlet type), the concentration at the interface is given.
(ii) In the second (Neumann type), the flux at the interface is given.
(iii) In the third type, a relationship between the concentration and the flux at the interface is given.
The boundary condition of the first type corresponds to a mode of controlled potential when the charge transfer reaction is reversible, while the second corresponds to a mode of controlled current. When the charge transfer is irreversible, the current density is expressed as:
