✦ Synopsis

We measured Pt L2.3-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra for the Pt particles supported on SiO 2, AI20 3 and MgO with and without adsorbed hydrogen. The new peaks appeared at 6-8 eV above the Pt L2,3-edges in difference spectra between those in vacuum and under hydrogen. The intensity of the new peak was found to be proportional to the amount of adsorbed hydrogen but independent of the kind of the supports. These results suggest that the XANES difference spectra provide a new method for in situ characterization of adsorbed hydrogen on supported Pt particles without interference of the support.
