✦ Synopsis

Abstract

A method is presented for the sensitive detection of minute amounts of H~2~^17^O. The method is based on the increase of the T~2~ of the water protons following an irradiation of the ~17~O resonance frequency, due to the partial or full decoupling of the ^1^H‐^17^O spin‐spin interaction. It is demonstrated that when ^17^O concentrations are low, full decoupling is achieved, and at short echo times the increase in the amplitude of the proton echo signal is proportional to the ^17^O content of the sample. The potential of the method for indirect ^17^O imaging is substantiated by a simple one dimensional projection of cylindrical phantoms containing various ^17^O concentrations. Using interleaved sequences with and without ^17^O decoupling, errors due to time dependent effects are minimized.

## Abstract We present a method for MR detection of ^17^O‐labeled phosphate groups. The method employs the __T__~2~ relaxivity effect of ^17^O on ^31^P nuclei to distinguish between ^17^O‐labeled and unlabeled phosphate groups, and uses spin‐echo (SE) acquisitions with RF decoupling at the ^17^O fr
