✦ Synopsis
The production of the negatively charged helium dimer He 2 can be enhanced by nearly an order of magnitude by utilizing laser excited alkali metals as charge-exchange material for fast He~-ions. The enhancement can be attributed to both steps in the charge-exchange reactions converting He~" via He 2 (a3~ + ) to He 2 (4IIg).
