✦ Synopsis
A new method IS described to determine changes Ay of the specdic surface energy of sohds from the elaatlc deformation of a circular plate using Kosters la$er mterferometry it was coo6rmed expenmentally that the deformatton 1s the same for normal pressure and for lateral stress A support of the plate was used wluch exerts almost no forces on the plate thus ensurmg maxunum sensihvlty of the method The error of the hght path of two beams reflected at a dtstance of about 1Omm was &O 2nm correspondmg to a sensltlvlty of Ay = f 3 mN m-' Simultaneous measurements of the changes of specific surface energy, mass and charge for the adsorption of KF and the underpotentml depoatlon of Pb, Tl and Zo on polycrystalhne gold are compared to theoretical pred~%ons. In ad&bon to the changes of super6ctal energy predicted by the L~ppmann equatlon contnbuhons from surface stress are observed which probably ongmate from structural changes m the surface
