Abstract
This article surveys the development of nonlinear contact and solutionβcontrol capabilities in an industrial finite element code, ANSYS 5.4. Various techniques for enhancing the easeβofβuse and robustness of the capabilities are discussed. Among these are the use of solution feedback and automatic adjustments, consistent tangent, and a combined penalty function and Lagrange multiplier method for contact analysis. It is argued that a future direction for finite element code development should be to provide easyβtoβuse nonlinear capabilities so that inexperienced finite element users can solve nonlinear problems independently without assistance from other sources such as highβend analysts or experienced users.
