✦ Synopsis

A new flow mixing calorimeter designed to measure the excess molar enthalpy of gaseous mixtures for which this quantity is positive is reported. The calorimeter is designed for use at pressures close to atmospheric and at temperatures up 473 K. Unlike the previously described flow mixing calorimeters which were all of differential design so that Joule-Thomson effects were cancelled out, the new design is a single calorimeter equipped with a mercury manometer so that the pressure drop across it can be measured and a correction for the Joule Thomson effect can be applied. The calorimeter is designed so that it can be easily removed from the apparatus and dismantled for modification. Test measurements at T = 373.15 K made using (nitrogen + cyclohexane) are reported, and the results are found to be in agreement with those made using a differential flow mixing calorimeter.
