โฆ Synopsis
Further cycloadditions occurring as secondary reactions lead to bicyclo[2.2.0]hexenes ( 4 ) . The position of the alkyl group on the double bond of ( 4 ) is not yet known.
1,3,3,4,4-Pentamethyl-I -cyclobutene ( 3 b )
2,3-Dimethyl-2-butene (2.5 g) and a 4 M solution of ethylaluminum dichloride (0.5 ml) in n-hexane are successively added to chlorobenzene (20ml) saturated with propyne, a stream of propyne being passed through the mixture for the duration of the reaction. An exothermic reaction is accompanied by red to brown coloration. As soon as the dimethylbutene has disappeared from the solution (GLC) it is shaken with water to destroy the catalyst and dried over magnesium sulfate. Compound ( 3 b ) is isolated by fractional distillation; b. p. 116"C, yield 1.Og (27%).
