✦ Synopsis

The wavclcngth of the rhodamine B lactonc ftuoresccna: is strongly dependent on solvent polarity, indicating an incxwsc in dipole moment of about 25 debye on excitation. In mcthylcne chloride and acctonitrile the fluorcscenrr of the quinoid form is also observed, although only the lactonc form is cxdtcd. With the help of quantum yiclds,and lifctimc measurcmcntc these results are interpreted in turns of a simple photochcmical scheme.
