this graph is meaningful only for integral values of n. We have incorporated in Figure 5 the case n s 3, which we w x discussed in an earlier paper 12 . We find that the general tendency is that, as one increases the number of loops, the cutoff ¨-value for a mode increases. We may thus say that, in these multiloop core waveguides, we get only one or two sustained modes, and as the loop number increases, the modes get more and more tightly bound to the guiding region.
