✦ Synopsis
The attempt of this paper is to establish an expression for predicting multiaxial fatigue crack initiation life with the invariants of stresses and strains. For the proportional loading process, a formula containing stress triaxiality and equivalent strain is proposed to reflect the influence of the stress state on multiaxial fatigue crack initiation life, in the light of local strain being the principal cause of fatigue damage. Test data in available literature for metals suffering tensile, torsional and tensile-torsional combined fatigue loadings are cited to check the proposed expression, and good agreement is found.
Although multiaxial fatigue has received much attention in the past [1-5], the problem cannot be considered to be solved completely. The multiaxial fatigue failure theories can be classified into three categories.
