In this paper we describe a new computing technique for the problem of identifying a dynamic system from a set of input-output measurements (observations). The new feature of the method is that it avoids having to solve any dynamic equations unlike the methods extant

The basic idea of the method can be stated quite simply. For convenience of notation we take advantage of the fact that the identification problem for a dynamic system can always be formulated as that of estimating the initial state of a nonlinear dynamic system. Thus (and we shall for the moment assume that the state space is finitedimensional) the problem can be expressed as follows (see [2] for elaboration):
