โฆ Synopsis
We report the synthesis and initial characterization of (\mathrm{Ba}{9} \mathrm{Sc}{2}) (\left(\mathrm{SiO}{4}\right){6}), the first example of a new oxide structure-type accommodating a large alkaline earth ion, (\mathrm{Ba}^{2+}), a large octahedral ion, (\mathrm{Sc}^{3+}), and tetrahedral silicate units. Transparent crystals which crystallize in the rhombohedral space group, (R \overline{3}), with (a_{\mathrm{H}}=) 9.8716(2) (\AA, c_{\mathrm{H}}=21.9376(7) \AA) were grown from a silica-rich eutectic melt. The structure contains layers made up of (\mathrm{ScO}{6}) octahedra linked by (\mathrm{SiO}{4}) tetrahedra. The (\mathrm{Ba}^{2+}) ions occupy large high-coordination-number interlayer sites.
