✦ Synopsis
It is shown that selective measurements of the magnetic dipole-dipole interactions bctwcen specific pairs of nuclear spins in gasses of concentrated aqueous e!ectroIytes can provide detailed structural information of rclovancc to the hquid. The validity of the approach is demonstrated by selective measurements of !he inter-and intra-molecular (1120) protonproton interactions in LICI and LiBr solutions at 100 K. For LiC1,4HzO, theu measurements arc consistent with a short range (no.8 nm) distorted sodium chloride structure with Cl-and Li(If~O)~ as basic units: each Cl-ion is octahedral& coordinated to six O-H bonds. For LiCI,RH~O solutions in the composition range 4 <R < 10. the excess Hz0 is packed mterstitiaily at the interfaces between clusters of LiC1,4HzO. This structure 19 consistent with vxlous properties of the solution at room temperature.
LiBr solutions have similar structures.
