โฆ Synopsis
A mechanism of solvophobic interactions has been suggested based on the elasticity of the spatial H-bond network of a solvent. This network pushes out solvophobic solute particles or solvophobic parts of molecules and lets them aggregate. The elasticity of the spatial network is estimated from the data on isothermal compressibility (bulk modulus) and structural relaxation (instantaneous shear modulus). The elasticity of a network is a bulk characteristic. Its magnitude is rather large โผ10 9 Pa or 10 6 dyn/ร 2 . This estimate allows us to draw the conclusion that the elasticity of the spatial H-bond network is the driving force of solvophobic interactions.
