✦ Synopsis
Experiments on grain boundary (G.B.) diffusion and segregation in Ag(Ni) solid solution showed that the strong nickel segregation only had a small effect on diffusion. This unexpected influence is explained by means of a simplified atomic analysis of diffusion and segregation. A further discussion enlarges this analysis to systems previously investigated: it underlines the difficulty of obtaining true G.B. diffusion coefficients and it stresses the necessity of having together with data on diffusion and segregation, information on G.B. structure to understand the actual effects of segregation on diffusion.
