โฆ Synopsis
Figure 4 H-plane radiation pattern of the array about 27.5 GHz, and reasonable agreement is obtained with only 1.5% deviation between the measurements and theory.
The H-plane radiation pattern of the array measured at 27.5 GHz is shown in Figure 4, where we can see that the main beam of the array is tilted about 20ะ from broadside. A cosecant pattern in the main beam is achieved. Sidelobe levels of about 10 dB and back-lobe levels of about 20 dB are reported. Good agreement in the main beam pattern can be observed.
When operating at millimeter-wave frequencies, the loss of a microstrip antenna should be considered. The gain of the array is only about 6 dBi in the simulation. Methods to improve the gain will be included in future work.
CONCLUSION
In this paper, a design method for a shaped-beam microstrip array is described. The cosecant pattern in the main beam of the array is achieved by controlling the excitation phase, and the excitation amplitude is linearly varied. The array operates at 27.5 GHz, and a tilt angle of 20ะ from broadside is achieved.
