Abstract
A formula for mutual impedance between patch antennas is constructed, based on the physics of the static near field and the radiation far field of the couplings. This leads to a synthetic asymptote form [1] of separated variables with center‐to‐center distance r and azimuth angle ϕ. Only 12 coefficients are to be determined by matching, using a full‐wave analysis with commercial software, such as IE3D. Our formula is complete with no restrictions on the detailed structures of patch, feed, and substrate. Numerical examples show that our formula is accurate. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
