✦ Synopsis

Pilot studies with preliminary forms of The Sex Inventory (SI) and replication studies with the revised Male Form have indicated significant differences in sex attitudes and behavior between control and clinical groups. Thorne and Haupt (a) report that the sex attitudes of a number of groups are distributed along a continuum that is characterized as radical-liberal versus conservative-repressive.

Scale scores based on independent factors derived statistically from a factor analysis of individual item responses offer the opportunity for further specifying differences in sex attitudes and behavior along additional objective continua. This study investigated the factor scale scores of normal and clinical groups of adult males on The Sex Inventory. It is hypothesized that significant group differences on various dimensions of sexual attitudes will be demonstrated. METHOD Subjects. The Ss were 526 adult males comprising six groups representing a wide range of age, education, religious belief, and cultural-social backgrounds2. The groups are described as follows:

Group I. This group consisted of 101 students at the University of Miami. The mean age waa 22.59 years, SD 4.69. Mean number of years of education was 15.02, SD 0.73.

Group 11. One hundred fort five felons, convicted of crimes involving property rather than persons, were im risoned at the Gorth Carolina State Prison at Raleigh. The mean age was 27.37 years, SD ?57, and the mean number of years of education was 8.96, SD 1.90.

Group 111. These 41 male inmates of the California Rehabilitation Center at Corona had drug addiction problems. Their mean age was 25.78 years, SD 8.41, and mean educational year was 9.91, SD 1.89.

The non-sexual crimes of these 38 felons at the North Carolina State Prison involved persons. The mean age was 28.87 years, SD 9.13, and mean educational year was 9.50, SD 3.61. These 26 homicidal felons (North Carolina State Prison) had a mean age of 30.23 years, SD 9.94. Their mean number of years of education was 8.88, SD 2.37. These 175 sex offenders were at the North Carolina State Prison and the Ionia State Hospital (Michigan). A wide range of sex offenses are included, such aa rape, homosexuality, exposure, etc. Many in this group had histories of multiple sex offenses.
