✦ Synopsis
The potential of X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the analysis of tribologically important interfaces is demonstrated. The application of the technique to the characterisation of representative model compounds is presented. The results showed the reliability of this method to investigate the local environment around a selected atom providing useful 'finger prints' for individual compounds. In a companion w x Ž . paper 1 this forms the basis for the examination of the structural role played by zinc di-alkyl-di-thiophosphates ZDDPs formulation additives in the anti-wear mediation of steelroil interfaces.
