✦ Synopsis

The paper reviews some of the current methods and proposes a new concept of assessment of hazards in road transportation and their physical simulation in the laboratory. In contrast t o the standard approach in which acceleration is the primary data, the new method depends on a knowledge of road profile (roughness) and a numerical simulation model of the interactions between road and vehicle. Monitoring the transportation environment will consist of sampling the vehicle speed and simultaneously tracking its route by means of a GPS device.
