β¦ Synopsis
A model is formulated for the "surface" combustion of a premixed gas mixture near the downstream surface of a porous solid. Large heat transfer occurs between the gas and porous solid, and there is significant radiant heat emission from the heated surface of the solid. Using large-activation-energy asymptotic methods an analytical solution is derived for the gas and solid temperature profiles within this burner. The influence of the key parameters --the convective heat exchange coefficient, the ratio of gas to solid conductivities, and the radiation coefficient--is evaluated. The present model predicts operational features of practical surface combustion burners such as radiant efficiency, flame lift-off limits, and thermal range of surface combustion operation. A prediction of the flashback limit can also be made using this theory.

## Abstract A steady gas convection model of heat transfer to a horizontal cylinder immersed in a large particle gas fluidized bed has been developed. The model is based upon the hypothesis that the large particles will be isothermal and includes the effect of radiation as well as interstitial turb
