✦ Synopsis
We demonstrated recently that the homogeneous chemical reaction of bro-mate~bromide-cerium in sulfuric acid solution (pure inorganic subsystem of the amazing oscillating Belousov-Zhabotinskii reaction [1]) carried out in the continuously stirred tank reactor exhibits bistability phenomena I-2]. This remarkable behavior has been shown to be caused by the nonlinear kinetics arising through feedback mechanisms (e.g., autocatalysis) [3]. Furthermore we have proposed a mathematical model containing realistic kinetic data. The rate constants and experimental parameters yield three steady-state concentrations of Br-, HBrO 2 (essential variables of the system), and Ce .3+, which in accordance with our experiments are extremely low. The differential equations describing the chemical reactions and the transport processes lead to the following equations:
