โœฆ Synopsis

The Dugdale [i] and Bilby, Cottrell and Swinden [2] model of an elastic/plastic crack is well known.

In their model (hereafter referred to as DBCS model) the yielding is assumed to be confined to an infinitesimally narrow band.

In practice, however, there is always some lateral spread of yielding at a crack root. This lateral spread is important since its effect is as if the crack had been considerably blunted . Smith and Vitek [4] extended the DBCS model to that where a notch or crack had elliptic cross section.

But they also assumed the yield regions to be confined to an infinitesimally narrow band.

In this report a simple elastic/plastic crack model which takes into account of lateral spread of yielding at the root is studied.
