✦ Synopsis

It is shown that the growth of enteric bacteria can be reasonably well simulated by first-order differential equations. The equations express the notion that one or more classes of protein are rate-limiting under any condition of growth. The model is used to calculate the effect of regulatory mutations that impose a new protein burden on ceils, and the roles of genetic regulation and of feedback inhibition in maximizing the growth rate are discussed.
