✦ Synopsis
AbstractÐA model for the isothermal crystallization of ®ber-reinforced polymers with signi®cant nucleation on the ®bers is presented. The model is based on exact and approximate expressions for the volume of intersection between a cylinder and a sphere located on the outside radius of the cylinder which allows to account for the eects of the ®bers on the overall crystallization process. The crystallization process is divided into time frames according to the validity of the solutions for the volume of intersection. The evolution of the crystallinity is computed for both thermal and athermal nucleation processes. The accelerating eect of ®ber-nucleated spherulites on the overall crystallization process is demonstrated with simple examples in which parameters such as the ®ber volume fraction, the ®ber radius, the nucleation density and an induction time are changed. Limitations of the current model are also discussed.
