A general mathematical model is developed.for planning and design of buildings. It is formulated as a quadratic programming model with linear constraints. The objective function may include the benefits and costs of establishing and operating the various activities of the building in the various spaces, and the merits of the interactions between activities along defined paths between spaces. The model may be applied at various levels including determination of overall building proportions, location of services core, allocation of actiz,ities to spaces, and design of structural and mechanical services.
