A new method for the esterification of a-keto acids with alkyl chloroformates is described, which is compatible with many functional groups.
Seoul 131, Korea Reaction of carboxylic acids with equimolar amounts of alkyl chloroformate and triethylamine in the presence of a catalytic amount of 4-dimethylaminopyridine affords the corresponding esters in high yields without the formation of the symmetrical anhydride in most carboxylic acids.
A one-pot preparation of carboxylic acids is described that proceeds from their corresponding amides by a 'dry' hydrolysis with phthalic anhydride in the absence of water and solvent. The method affords carboxylic acids in good yields and is applicable to a variety of substrates.
