Abstract
A previously reported model for spinโlattice coupling for 4f^7^ electrons, based on the assumption that intraionic interactions are perturbed by relativistic interaction with crystal lattice, is developed. Analytical formula for secondโ and fourthโorder spinโlattice coefficients are derived. Using these formula and the concept of the relativistic crystal field in the point charge approach the values of the spinโlattice coefficients for Gd^3+^ in CaF~2~ are calculated. These values are in much better agreement with the experimental values than those calculated so far. To the best of our knowledge the fourthโorder spinโlattice coefficients are calculated the first time and their values are about ten times smaller than the experimental ones.
