✦ Synopsis

An adaptive, multipole-accelerated technique is presented for the fast computation of capacitances of conducting structures that reside in stratified dielectric media. This technique is an extension of a previously reported method of moments based approach that uses a nonadaptive fast-multipole algorithm in conjunction with a closed-form Green's Rtnction for a stratified medium. In the proposed adaptive technique, the specific spatial arrangement of the images introduced by this Green's function is exploited to significantly reduce the excessive memory requirements associated with the earlier technique. It is shown that the reduction in memory is attained in such a manner that both speed and accuracy are not adversely affected.
