✦ Synopsis

In this paper is described a new method of finding the sum of the principal stresses in a two-dimenslonal model by means of ordinate measurements on a stretched rubber membrane as suggested by Den Hartog. The method is applied in detail on a bar with central circular hole in tension and is found to be easy in operation and of good accuracy.
