✦ Synopsis

This article illustrates the academic, clinical and personal perspective of an occupational therapy clinician working in Child Mental Health in New Zealand. It reflects her enthusiasm, beliefs and values, and the β€˜just right challenge’ in her work that stimulate her inner drive to succeed. It incorporates the conference theme of β€˜common threads’, the dynamic, interwoven relationships between persons and environment, and a belief in sharing knowledge with others. The influences of life experiences, mentors and colleagues on self‐directed learning are outlined, together with the impact this has on professional and clinical development. In particular, the development of training packages for students on clinical placement, supervision, social interaction and roles of occupational performance in children with emotional, psychosocial and behavioural disturbances are highlighted. Included are descriptive vignettes outlining casework with children and their families, and the conscious use of self as an effective tool in the evaluation and intervention process.
