En noviembre de 1910 apareció la segunda novela de Ramón Pérez de Ayala: A. M. D. G. La vida en los colegios de jesuitas, impresa en Madrid para la editorial Renacimiento. Tuvo tanto éxito que al año siguiente se reeditó, y volvió a ser impresa en 1923 y en 1931, año en que también se estrenó su adaptación teatral. Ramón Pérez de Ayala traza en esta novela autobiográfica un terrible retrato de la enseñanza de los jesuitas. Suscitó desde su aparición, una notable polémica. Aún hoy, no son pocos los que reducen esta novela a un juvenil panfleto antijesuítico. Estuvo más de 50 años sin poderse publicar. Se trata de un relato urdido a partir de recuerdos pasados, un fresco de costumbres escolares que supone, sí, la denuncia de una pedagogía y una religiosidad que al autor le parecían socialmente dañinas. Es considerada por algunos, Andrés Amorós entre ellos, una de las mejores novelas de Pérez de Ayala
