Abstract
A longβperiod grating (LPG) written in the cladding of an optical fiber is demonstrated. The optical fiber is specially designed and manufactured, which cladding is photosensitive, and core is not~.~ The cladding LPG is written in by illuminating a cladding photosensitive fiber with an UV lamp through an amplitude grating mask. The cladding LPG is compared with a core LPG manufactured in the same way, and the property of the cladding LPG is different from that of the core LPG. Β© 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this paper, we report novel long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) fabricated by using a new writing technique that is mainly based on the thermal shock effect of focused high-frequency CO 2 laser pulses at several kHz. Several unique characteristics of these LPFGs, such as bend and transverse-load,
## Abstract In this paper, we show that a complete threeβlayer analysis is necessary to characterise the cladding modes in order to obtain grating period, resonances, and coupling length in the design of longβperiod gratings (LPGs), and that the simplified twoβlayer fiber geometry used by many auth
