✦ Synopsis
Traditional link-state routing protocols are able to support data services over ATM networks, and are the basis of some recent networking solutions. From the network providers' point of view, the use of these routing protocols represents an important cost saving, because they are well known and widely used in the Internet. However, these protocols need to be improved to deal with traf®c variations. The aim of the routing proposal described in this paper under the name of Dynamic-Metric and Metric-Range (DM±MR) routing is to provide these traditional routing schemes with mechanisms for adaptation to network load conditions. The proposal comprises mechanisms for evaluating the traf®c load and mechanisms for updating the routing information accordingly. It includes also a path selection strategy that re¯ects the traf®c load condition.
