✦ Synopsis

out that also Cl radicals may play an important role for the chemical transformation of organic substances in marine environments [see, for example, ref. 1 -6]. Cl radicals can be formed through the reaction between HCl and OH [1] or through photolysis of chlorine containing molecules, originating from sea-salt aerosols [2,6]. It has been suggested that concentrations of Cl radicals between 10 3 and 10 6 molecules cm Ϫ3 are present in marine atmosphere [1,5 -7]. Since Cl normally reacts very fast it is important to obtain knowledge of reaction rates with organic substances including carbonyl compounds.

The gas-phase reaction of NO 3 radicals with isoprene was investigated under flow conditions at 298 K in the pressure range 6.8 Ͻ P(mbar) Ͻ 100 using GC-MS/FID, direct MS, and long-path FT-IR spectroscopy as detection techniques. By means of a relative rate method, the rate constant for the primary
