Abstract
The Savage–Hutter (SH) equations describe the motion of granular material under the influence of friction. Based on the kinetic formulation of the SH equations, we present a kinetic scheme in one dimension, which describes the deformation of the mass profile and allows it to start and to stop. Moreover the method is able to preserve the steady states of granular masses at rest. The method is tested on several numerical examples. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In this paper, we present a new two-layer model of Savage-Hutter type to study submarine avalanches. A layer composed of fluidized granular material is assumed to flow within an upper layer composed of an inviscid fluid (e.g. water). The model is derived in a system of local coordinates following a
tion law form. A unique Maxwellian distribution is then constructed from the updated physical values of each cell A new kinetic scheme based on the equilibrium flux method (EFM) and modified using Osher intermediate states is proposed. This and the process repeats. new scheme called EFMO combines t
