โœฆ Synopsis

Abstract

A series of kinetic measurements using FTโ€IR have been carried out in order to clarify the mechanism of the gaucheโ€trans isomerization process and the timeโ€temperatureโ€transformation relationships in poly(ethylene terephthalate). Twoโ€stage isomerization isotherms are distinguished on the logarithmic scale of annealing time: a primary transformation stage with an activation energy of 40 kcal/mol characterized by a sigmoidal curve, followed by a linear secondary process. The activation energies of the secondary transformation obey an equation of the Arrhenius type In__a__~T~ = B(1/T โˆ’ 1/T~m~) where 160 < T < 260ยฐC โ‰ˆ T~m~ and can be used to describe the effects of annealing time and temperature on the isomerization process of PET in the secondary transformation region. On the basis of these analyses, the morphology and microstructure of PET in these temperature regimes of the isomerization process are proposed.

## Abstract A rare case of thermodynamic miscibility has been demonstrated in the amorphous state (quenched glass as well as molten state) of a ternary blend system formed by poly(ether imide) and semicrystalline poly(ethylene terephthalate) and polyโ€(butylene terephthalate). Molecular-dynamics simulations have been used to study the nature of the conformational disorder in liquid n-octane. The potential model used is one in which all atomic sites are treated as centres of force, with intramolecular terms to describe the C-C-C bending and C-C-C-C torsional degrees of fre
