✦ Synopsis

I appreciate very much hearing from my old and fondly remembered compatriot and colleague, Dale Baker,' and welcome his efforts to contribute additional data to my study.' For some years concurrently, Dale Baker was head ofchemical Abstracts Service, and I was both head of information services at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, one of CAS's largest customers, and representative of the science information section of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association, representing a very large bloc of CAS's major customers. Dale and I carried on a fascinating correspondence and dialog, not always harmonious but always civil, principally on the subject of substructure search capability (or, more accurately, on the lack of it) in CAS's products in the 197Os, a topic of great concern to the pharmaceutical industry.

However, given that Mr. Baker does not spell this old colleague's name accurately (incorrect in all three attempts) despite its presumed familiarity. I am afraid that proper scholarly rigor, which Mr. Baker himself emphasizes, does not encourage the incorporation of his data in my study.
