✦ Synopsis
In modern geometrical optics GO the field solutions are described as bundles of rays in which the field associated with each ray is independent of the fields of the other rays. But this description is not ¨alid in caustic regions where neighboring rays intersect. The Gaussian beam pro¨ides an approximate global description of a modal-type field solution, which is ¨alid e¨en in caustic regions where GO is in¨alid. In this article a hybrid GO᎐Gaussian ray beam is presented. It beha¨es as a GO ray bundle in one cross section along the propagation direction and as a Gaussian beam in the other. We also present the equations for the reflection of such a beam from an arbitrary cur¨ed reflector. ᮊ 1997

On the basis of the second-order moment, the beam propagation of a higher-order cosh-Gaussian beam has been investigated. Two analytical expressions of the M 2 factor have been derived, which corresponds to the parity of the beam order n. The M 2 factor is determined by the beam order n and the para
