โœฆ Synopsis

The significance of chloride in its effect on the respiration of nerve fibers (Chang et al., '35) and in propagation of the nervous impulse (Hodgkin and Katz, '49) has been considered. There is an indication that chloride ions may be necessary for the maintenance of the excitability of nerve fibers (Lorente de N6, '47, p. 58). I n view of these suggestions, it is of fundamental interest to determine if chloride is present in nerve and if it is present inside and/or outside of the axons.
