✦ Synopsis
A new method for fabricating microstrip-coplanar waveguide transitions with a diffraction technique has been demonstrated. This technique offers a simpler fabrication process, and has been found to achieve low-loss performance that is as good as that found with the conventional RIE technique. The transition produced by this way has a very sloped side wall, which greatly improves the deposition of metal on the side wall. Work is currently under way to characterize electrode waveguides for Mach-Zehnder modulators fabricated with this technique and will be reported elsewhere.
