A group of children report the body of a man trapped inside a glacier. This is no ancient ritual murder, but a handyman from the local town. Unmarried, no kids, a good worker - blasted through the chest by a shotgun at point blank range. The extreme cold makes the time of his death impossible to tell. When Kate Shugak starts to investigate, she finds that no-one has seen the murdered man for at least six months, and that someone has razed his home to the ground. And when she starts asking questions someone tries to burn down her cabin, with Kate inside.
