Given the experience of the past 20 years and what he calls a major price cycle, the author details his forecasts for the structure of industry and internal dynamics of oil and gas companies. He sees a need for upstream and downstream integration and for a strong downstream sector built by aggressive exploration and acquisition. He forecasts a trend toward state-of-the-art refining, and a need to cut costs in the petrochemical industry in the midst of pressing environmental problems. The internal organization of companies will have to make do with fewer hierarchical levels in order to react quickly.
