โœฆ Synopsis

The repair or replacement of defective structures can be avoided if it can be shown that the defects will grow a negligible amount in service. Methods are required to assess the rate of crack growth in service conditions in terms of the rate of growth in test conditions. Computer procedures are being developed to analyse the growth of a crack in a linear or non-linear material using the CEGB stress analysis program BERSAFE. It is anticipated that the procedures may be used, firstly for a generation type analysis of crack growth in test conditions, i.e. which will obtain an empirical relationship between the rate of crack growth and one or more suitable parameters characterising crack tip conditions, and then for a prediction type analysis in service conditions using this relationship.

Suitable parameters have recently been reviewed by Atluri and Nishioka

All these contours defined on one contour may be evaluated by integration on another and adding an integral over the surface between. Some contours for integration are shown in Figure I.
