Abstract
An adaptive nonlinear inversion method based on the Riccati equation in the dispersive inverse‐scattering problem is presented for synthesizing both single and coupled nonuniform transmission lines (NTLs) with arbitrary lobe‐like backward responses. In this method, the specified responses of those lines are first shaped by an optimum perturbation of inherent null points in the electrical‐length domain, and then sampled to straightforwardly determine the corresponding modal impedance profiles, hence avoiding the step‐by‐step segmentation process and overall optimization routines that plague most inversion schemes supporting non‐TEM modes. Some transformers and filters with controlled responses are illustrated for generality. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 38: 52–56, 2003
