โœฆ Synopsis

Abstrati-The electrodeposition of silicon from SiO, dissolved in molten cryolite has been investigated using chronopotentiometry at nickel working electrodes. The reduction mechanism involves the slow predissociation of a silica complex to form an electroactive species: where the equilibrium constant K = k,/kb = 1.36, k, = 31.0 s-l and k* = 23.0~~'. The preceding slow chemical reaction and subsequent silicon-nickel interaction caused curvature in the E us In (Al"tl/')/tl'* plots and deviation from the expected value of n = 4. The diffusion coefficient for the electroactive species was found to be 6.4 x 10m5 cm-*/s at 1293 K.

The passivation characteristics of a planar zinc electrode have been examined in 2 M KOH electrolytes containing a variety of additions. The time to passivation has been measured and compared to that of a planar cadmium electrode in 5.3 M KOH. The most promising additives were found to be borate and

The mechanism of the reduction of tantalum(\r) in molten fluorides (LiF-NaF-KF eutectic) was investigated in order to resolve the controversy in the literature. The technique used was mainly chronopotentiometry. It was concluded that at a C-E-E mechanism applies, that is, a chemical reaction follow
