✦ Synopsis

Abstract

The action of dorsal unpaired median (DUM) neurons of the locust Schistocerca gregaria and the grasshopper Romalea microptera was examined on the intrinsic rhythmic contractions that occur in their jumping muscles. The DUM neuron directly innervating the muscles, DUMETi, causes from partial to complete inhibition of the rhythm outlasting the stimulation by up to several minutes. The extent of inhibition, its time of onset and its duration, are proportional to the number and frequency of impulses. Other DUM neurons either exert a weaker, delayed effect, or none at all.

## Abstract This report presents results of a study in __Schistocerca gregaria__ of large dorsal unpaired median neurons found previously in ganglia of several insects (Crossman et al., ^1^71a; Hoyle, unpublished). Most of these neurons give off a single median neurite that makes a T‐branch, provid
